Sample Summer Itineraries

Want to plan a trip to the Reynolds Mansion and don’t know what to do in the area?  Look no further!  We’ve put together our favorite destinations across all varieties of summer activities.  You can mix and match depending on your likes, the weather, or how much you want to pack into a day.  We’re including miles and time from the Reynolds Mansion so you can accurately plan and make the most of your stay.

For the Outdoor Enthusiast

If you enjoy the outdoors, Centre County is the place for you.  We live in a valley between beautiful mountains which creates multitudes of outdoor fun.  You can fish, hike, bike, walk, kayak, golf, and even go hot air ballooning.

Penn State Arboretum – beautiful gardens, pavilions, fountains, place of beauty and renewal, free admission

15-minute drive – 10 miles

Bald Eagle State Park – 59-acre park, swimming, boating, diverse habitats, bald eagle sightings, free admission. Rent a boat or bicycle right at the park.

15-minute drive – 12 miles

Fly Fishing in Centre County – Spring Creek offers world-class trout fishing.  See our website for local guides – all day or 1/2 day excursions. Many other creeks in the county also offer world-class fishing.  Our recommendation would be to contact one of the guides for more information.

Hot Air Ballooning – this is a year-round activity. Sky’s the Limit Ballooning offers flights twice daily depending on the weather.  $200 per person.

16-minute drive – 9 miles

Millbrook Marsh Nature Center – 62-acre nature preserve. Open 9-5 weekdays. Free parking. Unique marsh ecosystem with varieties of plants, mammals, fish, etc..

14-minute drive – 9 miles

Mt. Nittany Conservancy – 9 miles of trails to hike up Mt. Nittany.  Beautiful views of Penn State campus from the top. Very popular hike.

13-minute drive – 13 miles

Penn State Golf Courses – 2 championship courses.  Rates starting at $33 for the general public. Open 7 days per week.

21-minute drive – 13 miles

Rothrock State Forest – Premier mountain biking area in PA with a combination of 290 miles of trails and state forest roads to use.  We can store your bicycle.

42-minute drive – 28 miles

Toftrees Golf Course – 18-hole course.  Challenging.  $40 includes cart.  One of PA’s “Best places to play”.

16-minute drive – 12 miles

Tussey Mountain Outfitters – located within walking distance, rent kayaks and canoes, and enjoy the day on Spring Creek. Closed Tues. and Wed. Most excursions last 3-4 hours. Rates start at $45 per person.

For the History Buff

American Philatelic Society – Stamp Collections, workshops, sales, library, stamp authentication.  We offer our APS members a 10% discount on their stay.

4-minute drive – 1 mile

Bellefonte Art Museum – Exhibits, events, classes, and sales.  Located in the historic Linn House on Allegheny St. in Bellefonte. Open Fri – Sun 12:00 – 4:30pm.

1-minute drive – 0.3 miles

Bellefonte Historical Railroad Society –  Hosts speeder rides over the summer and during the Bellefonte Cruise Car Show on Father’s Day Weekend. Super cute Santa Express rides in December and Fall Foliage Rides in October.

2-minute drive – 0.5 miles

Boalsburg Heritage Museum – Featuring historical items significant to Boalsburg and Centre County.

18-minute drive – 13 miles

Centre County Genealogy Society – For people interested in their family tree/ancestry.  All programs are free and open to the public.

16-minute drive – 9 miles

Centre Furnace Mansion – Built in 1942 by ironmaster, Moses Thompson. Open Sundays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 1:00 – 4:00pm. Tours are free but donations are appreciated.

Columbus Chapel and Boal Mansion – $10 tours. Open every day except Mondays from May 1 – October 31, closes at 5:00pm. Christopher Columbus artifact.

18-minute drive – 13 miles

PA Military Museum – $6 tours. Closed Mon. and Tues. Open Wed. thru Sat. 10am – 4pm and Sun. 12 – 4pm. Open on Memorial Day, Labor Day, and Veteran’s Day.

Piper Aviation Museum – $6 tours. Preserves the history and legacy of the Piper Aircraft Corporation. Open every day until 4:00pm.

For the Shopper

There are many antique shops within walking distance of the mansion as well as women’s clothing, jewelry, and a shop that features works by local artists.

Art a la Carte – art, jewelry, and beautiful gifts.  Located on Allegheny Street in the heart of downtown Bellefonte.

Confer Jewelers – A local favorite.  This jewelry store opened in 1977.  Also located on Allegheny Street in downtown Bellefonte.

CO2 Boutique – unique gifts such as fashion jewelry, scarves, frames, purses, fashion items, and baby gifts. Again, located on Allegheny Street.

Helen Foxx & Co. – women’s clothing boutique.  You guessed it, also on Allegheny Street in Bellefonte!
