As you begin to plan for your fun-filled Bellefonte vacation, you may be already looking forward to exciting adventures and comfortably beautiful moments spent nestled in the warm embrace of our Reynolds Mansion Bed & Breakfast. If this is your first visit to Pennsylvania, you may be wondering what all there is to do in and around town, so today, we would like to take a few minutes to discuss one of our favorite parts of living here, the beautiful Mount Nittany. Standing guard over our neighborhoods and communities and giving so many ways to enjoy its stately presence, the mountain may become your second favorite part of your Pennsylvania getaway!
Small but Mighty
Although Mt. Nittany, whose name comes from the Algonquian word Nit-a-nee and means “the mountain”, is technically a tad too small to be considered a mountain, it is still higher than a hill and we think its name suits it just fine. It is, however, a part of the ridge that separates two local valleys, Nittany and Penns, and has provided entertainment to everyone in the region for centuries. Penn State University, our hometown and much acclaimed state college sits at its base and for the 168 years of its existence, the mountain has served as a playground for all the bright young students in attendance.
More Than Just a Backdrop
The beauty of Mt. Nittany definitely adds to the appeal of our town, but it is more than just a pretty face. 800 acres of the mountain are a part of the Mt. Nittany Conservancy serving as a safe refuge for wildlife and ensuring that the trees that may grow on it are kept from becoming someone’s flooring. This important conservancy ensures that generations of travelers and residents will forever be able to enjoy surprise encounters with shy deer and tired hikers will continue to stay cooler in the shade of mature trees.
The Hike of a Lifetime
The trails that lead from its base to its peak are what will draw you towards it, offering a quiet and serene way to get in your steps. Offering a series of trails that lead from the bottom to the top (how logical!) it may not be the easiest hike you accomplish this year, but once you reach the top, or more specifically the extremely popular Mike Lynch Overlook, you will understand why you took your precious vacation moments to push your body past its normal limits. The landscape of our Pennsylvania town spreads out before you, offering breathtaking views of its idyllic charms, and, for our guests who may be Penn State alumni, will ensure that all your memories of that wonderful time in your life will come rushing back. From this spot high atop Mt. Nittany, views of the campus and its Beaver Stadium are the best views, encouraging hikers to take many photos in remembrance.
The Rest you Deserve
The hikes you take on Mt. Nittany will not be easy ones, and when you return to the comfort of your Reynolds Mansion accommodations at the end of the day, our comforts and luxuries will give you the rest you deserve.
Privacy, well-appointed guest rooms, and elegant amenities come together here to create an unforgettable stay from start to finish. Wake up and enjoy our three-course gourmet breakfast before heading out to explore these historic sites and museums.
